Ah, inspiration. What a fickle mistress.
We've all been there. Artist or not, we've all experienced at some point or another that feeling of "writer's block" (or animator's block, or painter's block, or how-am-I-going-to-redecorate-my-living-room block). I think we can all agree that that feeling is a royal pain in the...bum.
In my experience, "animator's block" (I'm switching over here because it seems more appropriate) can come in two main forms. The first is the Fool's Gold version. Imagine yourself successfully panning for gold in a river, picturing your future mansion and super hunky pool boy... and then discovering that you have NOTHING! The gold that you've found is fool's gold, and the vision of Hunky Pool Boy fades away like the end of a dream sequence on a 1960's sitcom.
Back in reality, the Fool's Gold version generally takes place over the course of two days. It'll be time for bed, and all of a sudden you have all these brilliant ideas! Like, the greatest ideas in the history of ideas! And you think to yourself, "Heck yes! I shall get a good night's sleep and in the morning I will crank these puppies out and it'll be AMAZING!!!" ...And then you wake up the next morning and everything you found glorious the night before seems mediocre at best and you try not to consider that everything you believe in is a lie.
The second form of animator's block is the Tumbleweed Syndrome. It is straightforward and to the point, and is basically when there is nothing going on in that big ole Idea Bank in your brain. Nothing. Try as you might, it's just desert sand and tumbleweeds. You might get the occasional idea floating by, but like a plastic bag caught in the wind, it is there one minute and gone the next. Was it a good idea? Could I MAKE it a good idea? Wait, what was it again?? ...Tumbleweeds.
Is it frustrating? Goodness yes! Fortunately, both of these conditions do eventually pass and soon you will be able to once again function like the creative genius that you are. So don't give up on your dreams just yet! (I'm looking at you, Hunky Pool Boy.)
Much love,
Nicole
